As you may know, running a support group, especially one as large as ours, takes a lot of volunteers and help is always needed.  If you or someone you know feels a calling or has a desire to help others, please review the list below and let us know if there is something you would like to help with.

THANKS!

Volunteers are needed in the following areas:

Autism Siblings Group:  meets the 2nd Saturday of each month from 9 – 11am at the White River Christian Church in Noblesville.  Volunteers can sign up to help on a permanent or rotating basis.  For more information about this group, please check our website, www.hcasg.org, or contact Jane Grimes at janegrimes@hcasg.org

Childcare during support group meetings and events:  our support group meetings are the 2nd Saturday of each month from 9 – 11am at the White River Christian Church in Noblesville.  We may occasionally have events for parents where childcare would be helpful.  Volunteers can sign up to help on a permanent or rotating basis.  For more information about this group, please check our website, www.hcasg.org, or contact Jane Grimes at janegrimes@hcasg.org  or Beth Schweigel at bethschweigel@hcasg.org.

April Community Awareness Program:  This program has been done for the past two years.  The first year we set out about a dozen donation jars and brochures in various businesses.  The second year we set out about 2 dozen donation jars, brochures, and hung up signs in local businesses in Sheridan, Westfield, Noblesville, and Fishers.  We also decorated Main Street in Sheridan with autism awareness signs and ribbons.  We are hoping to increase the number of businesses and the amount of information each year.

-Our goal with this program is to increase awareness in the community and in local businesses throughout Hamilton County.  For more information about this program, please contact Jane Grimes at janegrimes@hcasg.org  or Beth Schweigel at bethschweigel@hcasg.org.

April School Awareness Program:  This program has been done for the past two years with local schools.  First year, we worked with four area schools and the second year we worked with eight area schools.  We are hoping to increase the number of schools each year.

-Our goal with this program is to increase awareness in the schools by educating the staff and the students about autism.

«we provide them with information, activities and handouts.

«each student receives a small gift (we have done bookmarks in the past)

«students collect change throughout the week, the classroom that raises the most money wins a prize (pizza party, popcorn party, etc.)

«the money raised by the school is used to purchase an item of their choice that will help benefit their special needs students.

For more information about this program, please contact Jane Grimes at janegrimes@hcasg.org  or Beth Schweigel at bethschweigel@hcasg.org.

April Voices of the Spectrum:  This event was such a success that we decided to make it an annual event.  The first year we had over 300 people in attendance, were able to get each community in Hamilton County to declare April Autism Awareness Month, raised funds for our group, produced a short DVD, Faces of Autism, which features our local children, teens and adults on the spectrum, and produced a professional DVD of the Voices of Spectrum event.

-Our goal for this event is to increase awareness and support through the “voices” of those on the spectrum.

«the impact of what is said by those on the spectrum is the best way for those of us not on the spectrum to learn and try to have some sort of idea of what life is like for them.

«continue the Voices of the Spectrum theme, but make it a little different each year to maintain interest and variety.

«2010 a Voices of the Spectrum Talent Show is planned, so that those on the spectrum can show off their various talents as well as tell us about their life experiences.

«increase attendance.

For more information about this event, please check our website, www.hcasg.org, or contact Jane Grimes at janegrimes@hcasg.org .

June Race for Autism:  2009 was our first year for this event and our first attempt at an event of this type.  We feel like with over 100 in attendance and a good amount of funds raised, it was a success.  This was originally the idea of an 8 yr old little boy, Alex, who wanted to raise funds and awareness for his cousin.  He held a small race from his house to the neighborhood park and invited several of his friends for his birthday.  Instead of gifts he asked everyone to donate $5 and raise funds to participate in his race.  We were so impressed by this young man and his idea that we decided to turn it into an annual event.

-Our goal with this event is to raise funds for our group to support our programs and events, to have a day of fun for local families both on or not on the spectrum, and to raise awareness through fun and activities.

«the race is held at the White River Christian Church, in their parking lot and is approximately ¼ of a mile for one lap.

«there are vendors, games, crafts, and various activities and other races for all ages.

For more information about this event, please contact Jane Grimes at janegrimes@hcasg.org  or Beth Schweigel at bethschweigel@hcasg.org.

Grant Writer:  We are in need of additional Grant Writers to help our group.  If you have any experience with grant writing, a legal background, or just like filling out paperwork, and would like to volunteer some time to help, please contact
